Yugong Yishan

Yugong Yishan (愚公移山) is one of Beijing's top live music venues, pulling both high-profile Chinese indie rock bands as well as cutting-edge foreign bands. With its ex-cinema opulence and second-floor "VIP" room, its status is well earned.

Right next to the busy Zhangzi Zhonglu intersection, the door to Yugong Yishan seems unassuming for what it contains. As you step through the door and wind your way to the box office, you uncover a world beyond the busy main streets. The interior is expansive and plush with carpet, edged in gold paint, and adorned with mirrors. Though still on the shabby side of opulence, the grunge is definitely of indie rock origins, so it doesn't lose any of its street cred. The performance area beyond the bar is wide and deep, two-tiered to afford somewhat of a range of views, though the sound booth in the middle makes standing behind them almost impossible.

The music ranges from the obvious indie rock to Beijing's punk stylings, as well as the occasional foreign import, which equally range from electro-pop to ska to shoegazers. And if it all gets too much, or you fancy having a shot at hanging out with the 'in' crowd, just head upstairs to the second bar. You're likely to see one or two of the bands you've just seen on stage or, if not, all the other concertgoers just getting away from the crowd.

Opening Hours:
Daily 7pm - Late

Directions:
北京市东城区张自忠路3-2号
段祺瑞执政府旧址大门西侧
West Courtyard Former Site of Duan Qirui Government, 2-3 Zhang Zizhong Road

Take a taxi or catch the subway to Zhangzi Zhonglu station (Line 5) and get out at exit A. Heading west on Zhangzi Zhong Road, it's just past the large stone lions and beside a traditional wooden door marked with a white-on-black sign post.
