D-22

D-22 is now CLOSED
D-22, "The Home of China's Underground" does not disappoint. Set in from the main road and almost missable, it looks like a dive from the outside but does not disappoint inside. Blasting the latest in student and experimental rock and punk, this is a venue not to pass over.

Funded and founded by an American who likes to play with his money, D-22 may be losing money every month but it is gaining in popularity. Situated right in the student area of Beijing, it has made itself known with University Wednesdays, offering up the newest, freshest sounds from Beijing's college bands. It's a venue best known for its punk rock roots, with mainstays such as the widely known punk rockers Carsick Cars and Joyside calling D-22 home, but turn up on any day of the week and you will could catch anything from experimental flautists and acoustic singer-songwriters to thrashing rockers and Ramones-esque wannabes.

D-22 is a tiny venue, skinny and sticky and looks like someone has hollowed out their apartment to allow the local pub rock bands a place to jam. There's no backstage, meaning you can meet any of the bands you want to, and with a beautiful view upstairs and very comfortable couches, you can remain as seen or unseen as you desire. The drinks are reasonable priced, the bands are always hot and rocking, and if you don't like the scene, 13 Club is just down the road.

Opening Times:
Daily 8pm-2am

Directions:

NEW DIRECTIONS!
Since Line 4 was established, there has been a much easier way to get to D-22. Get out at East Gate of Peking University (北京大学东门) exit C (south-east exit) and head east on Chengfu Lu. D-22 is a 5-10 minute walk, depending on your speed. Below are the directions from Line 13's Wudaokou, the traditional method of arrival at D-22.

From 五道口 Wudaokou Station, get out at exit A (north exit) and head west on Chengfu Lu. After you pass Zhongguancun Dongjie (a major intersection), continue west. You will see the Microsoft and Google buildings on the opposite side of the road. When you see 13 Club, keep walking, and you will not see it until you think you've gone too far. It looks like a bar, and will probably look closed, but watch for the student hipsters and they'll lead the way.
