Brave Face was formed in Beijing in the summer of 2009. Four guys from four different countries got together in Beijing's notorious jidiwenhua (The Dungeon) rehearsal rooms and amongst the smell of piss and mould wrote some ok songs.
Once they started practicing above-ground they realised the songs were a little bit better than ok, and some shows followed. The Old What show was career defining, and Brave Face, despite their regrettable name, garnered a tiny but rabid fanbase, based mostly around legendary now defunct bar Neds, in Nanluoguxiang, where Brave Face was on permanent loop. After hastily recording 6 songs, the band went on an extended hiatus. The corpse, alas, was still breathing, and in mid 2011 Brave Face reformed to play songs from their seminal demo at D22 on a Thursday night. That show coincided with the biggest rain storm in Beijing's history (cars floating in GuoMao anyone?), but still 35 people came to D22 to see the show, even though every other band booked for the show had to cancel. Defiant, Brave Face will play more shows in September 2011, with new songs and a change of musical direction pending.
