What is the Gig Guide?
The Beijing Gig Guide is an event listing site aimed at the floating English-speaking population of China's capital city. It is focused on the alternative music scene - that is, being alternative from the pervasive pop music that floods Chinese mainstream culture - and follows a few core venues where the majority of Beijing and China's best indie artists are bound to perform. It is updated monthly, using Douban, official venue websites and venue newsletters to translate and pass on information about upcoming shows and new bands.
Who runs the site?
Just me! My name is Alex Searson (I'm a girl; don't let the name fool you), and I arrived in Beijing in March 2009. My previous life in Sydney was heavily focused on the local music scene there, and I brought that interest with me. When I found that there was no dedicated website for this sort of event listing, I took it upon myself to create one. The construction and maintenance of the website is done by my father, David Searson, who runs a web development company called Sydney SOHO. I get help every now and then updating gigs from my friends at Rock in China, and occasionally from event promoters and artists themselves.
Some notes
The information on this website is liable to change without my knowledge. Translations on artist pages are rough and information is scarce, but I try my hardest. I know I'm missing some great venues, but I'm updating as much as I can. If you'd like to help out in any way, please contact me at alex@beijinggigguide.com.
