I’m not sure how much this is being mentioned, but as I spent a large portion of this afternoon updating the gig guide, I have only just come across this. The Tiger Translate Battle of the Bands 2011. Yes, another battle of the bands. First there was GBOB, then there was that mini-BOB for someone to tag along to Summer Sonic, only yesterday I found out that Zippo’s hosting their own, and then this! It’s a little… overwhelming.
At any rate, you can sign up your band here — the cut-off is tomorrow, though. Or, if you’re just in it to see what’s going on, I’ve updated the gig guide with all of the shows, even though a few of them are off my radar. Headliners at this show include: Perdel, Pet Conspiracy, Twisted Machine, Hedgehog, Reflector, and XTX heading up the finals. Check it out over at the gig guide. There’ll be plenty of battling going on this month…
yeah i think it’s a little ridiculous to have so many “battles.” it just seems like a lot of recycled music and ideas with the only obvious point being pushing some new brand’s poster into my retina. i’m not even sure what the “prize” is for this one… playing a show with Pet Conspiracy? if you want to play with any of these bands, first make a band that’s good, then play shows at venues where they hang out, then hang out with them and form a real relationship that isn’t mediated by a sponsor. that’s how it’s done everywhere else! you don’t need Tiger Beer to make your dreams come true.
–end rant–
@josh
I am totally with you there. Really, Global Battle of the Bands should be enough! If the idea of a battle of the bands is to give more exposure and experience to a large number of new/unpracticed bands, you only need to do it once a year. Anything more renders the whole exercise pointless.
The prize — should you win at the finals — is not only sharing the stage with XTX, but also RMB100k, and getting to play overseas. Which is cool (and also made possible by its intense branding), but unnecessary. There’s plenty of opportunity for a band willing to do the time in the scene, as you say. And really, growing up as a band in the scene only makes you better. Winning a BOB won’t.
BoB are becoming the new festivals — same bands each time, different sponsors flashing their brand around. It’s getting to the point where people will just stop going, like they have with festivals here. The ‘Oh, well, I can see that band next week anyway’ deal.
I agree with you both hard work, building relationships with musicians and other industry peeps is the way to get places, not winning a popularity contest and playing one big show. And that’s not hard, like Josh said musicians aren’t hiding, just hang out after shows and you’ll meet them. One of the thing I love about Beijing in everyone in the industry here is down to earth, friendly, happy to chat, have a beer and help each other out.
I only hope they have a decent voting system for this one because that’s where things can go wrong as a few other recent BoBs have shown. And of course that they actually come through with the prizes in the end. Are Rustic still waiting for the UK tour they won at GBoB 18mths ago?
