This is another guest review by my friend Peter Davis. Any more and I might have to actually make a login for him on the blog…
What better way to spend a summer’s eve than in 2 Kolegas, listening to a Swiss yodeling trio and a Mongolian rock band!
Whilst my friends and I pondered if a taxi would take us in the nearby drive-in cinema and wait while we watch Thor, we could hear the unique sound of Christian Zehnder Trio. Unique is indeed the word as the threesome jive to their own heritage, playing the cozy venue like it was their living room. Their use of numerous instruments to accompany the Swiss yodeling was great to watch and their natural charm became infectious.
This gave off a really fun vibe before the heavier but no less fun, Hanggai.
Here’s a band that have already played festivals in Germany, Australia and move onto the U.S. in June. Through my experience of gig-going, the best are always the ones for which you have no expectations. I had no expectations. They were superb. As the first song resonated around us, the fine art of throat singing filled the room like a druid march. The sound suited perfectly, not quite metal, not quite rock and not really folk music either, they reminded me of an Asian ‘Reel Big Fish’. Their songs (despite the fact no-one seemed to know the words) really got the intimate crowd geared up. ‘Xiger Xiger’ slowly waltzed around the room before thrashing through the crowd like a knife. ‘Jiu Ge’ or drinking song, showed signs of the bands influences, Pink Floyd, Rage Against the Machine and Neil Diamond. The only downside to their set was that there was no encore. Their show and appearance was almost theatrical, don’t miss them if they come round again soon!
