As mentioned in the gig of the week post, I first saw this folk duo last September at the Music Funhill Festival, on the Daisy Stage which had no artist list in any of the promotional materials. They were a lovely surprise, tucked in the back corner with sound bleeds from other stages, and had captured a solid crowd for themselves. What struck me, then, was the strength of the girl’s voice, and the sweetness of the words the young man used to introduce each song.
None of those things had changed from then until this performance. They had a few old friends in the crowd, however, which made Qi Bing (the young man) a lot more talkative than usual, but that didn’t hurt the performance. An herself is fairly quiet, so occasionally he seemed to railroad her (at one point she said she was his secretary, when she was helping him find the right lyric page in his book), but they seem to have been performing together for a long time so their dynamics definitely work within the performance.
Their music is fairly simple folk, but tonight they introduced a couple of new songs that were definitely more on the rock and roll side of things. However, because they only had an acoustic guitar with them, they played them as videos on a computer in the middle of the stage. The first song had a great tune, but it was called “放下你的枪口/Put Down Your Gun” and was accompanied by a slideshow of images of captured and slaughtered animals, which was a bit confrontational and unexpected from an adorable folk duo that had up until then been singing light love songs. The lyrics were also a little heavy, but I would imagine that I would have enjoyed it a bit more if the images hadn’t been there. The second song was better, but I would have easily preferred them both performed live.
But really, they still managed to blow me away. I was concerned that I had hyped them too much in my own mind, and that they wouldn’t be as good as I had remembered, but they were. I really enjoyed their stage presence, and even though Qi Bing talked a lot, I prefer that over bands who get on stage and forget to say anything, even their band name. They took turns being lead singer, playing the guitar, and being the percussionist. Though I didn’t get the impression that they were a couple, they certainly have a great chemistry between them and I really loved watching them. They were selling their album at the gig for 40RMB, and I picked up one without thinking about it, since the gig had been free. Check them out on Douban and Youku and look out for them performing near you.
