Why: Yet again I am drawn to a gig from our Shanghai comrades, and The Fever Machine doesn’t sound from their Douban like they will disappoint. I read about them only just yesterday at Kungfuology, and though it took Jake a few times to get into what he heard, just from first listen I’m pretty sure that at D-22 with a beer in my hand it’ll be easy to get into. The B-Side Lovers were a recent addition to the lineup, and is another excuse to see Atom pound her way through a drum. I’ve never seen Guaili before but have heard a few songs from Maybe Mars samplers and the like. And I can’t be sure, but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion I’ve seen The Molds before. In any case, it looks as though it’ll be a fun, raucous night at D-22 — just the thing to get back into the swing of summer gigs.
There are some very worthy runners up this week, the first of which being Peng Lei’s “book launch” gig at Mao, where New Pants and The Dancers will play and you can check out the photobook Beihai Monster (Sat @ 9PM, 80/60RMB). This week you can also catch DH & Chinese Hellcats at Dos Kolegas, Sat @ 10PM, 50RMB; and Streets Kill Strange Animals with campus rockers Luxinpei at D-22, Tue @ 9PM, 30/20RMB.
The Dos Kolegas Fifth Anniversary celebrations were exactly as you’d imagine it. If you’ve never been to Dos Kolegas, it is one of Beijing’s finest dive bars. D-22 might have the name and the status, but Dos Kolegas has a completely different atmosphere. Dos Kolegas is tucked away in an otherwise unloved corner of a drive-in movie theatre complex, and has an expansive outdoor area that is well taken advantage of in the summer when the inside temperatures are exactly as hot as the music being performed on stage. People are friendlier and more open, including all of the staff, and bands seem far more willing to hang out there than any other venue I’ve been to yet. There’s something comfortable in the atmosphere, though I have to admit that you must be in the mood for it, or else extremely drunk.
