When I can’t make it to a gig that I’ve been really interested in going to, I usually spend some time clicking around the internet trying to find out what I missed out on. This show, taking place near the anniversary of John Lennon’s murder in 1980 (I can’t believe it’s been nearly thirty years now), collected some of Beijing’s best groups to come forth and cover some of The Beatles’ hits. Covering both the early Beatles smash hits like “Hard Days Night” and “Love Me Do” through to the late-Beatles meanderings like “Lady Madonna” and “Hey Jude”, this was a gig that truly paid tribute to not only the spirit of John Lennon’s lyrics, but also The Beatles as a group.
So here’s a bunch of stuff I’ve found floating around the internet that captures what this gig was like. Mainly from Douban, Youku, and just clicking around the Chinese internet overall.
First off, let’s take a look at the set list from the evening. I’m not sure why “Let It Be” was covered twice, but they were at least at two ends of the gig.
Flying Midnight (午夜飞行):
1. Back In The USSR
2. Let It Be
3. Get Back
4. Come Together
5. Across The Universe
Redberry (红色浆果):
1. Lady Madonna
2. Taxman
3. I Me Mine
Careless:
1. Love Me Do
2. A Hard Day’s Night
3. From Me To You
DUDE:
1. Obla-di Obla-da
2. Hey Jude
3. Let It Be
Ugh, I am so jealous. Mostly of the Flying Midnight set, because not only are those some of my favorite Beatles songs but I am falling quickly for Flying Midnight.
Here’s a video of Redberry covering Taxman:
I couldn’t find any more videos, no matter what my search terms or where I looked, but there are a bunch of photos over at Douban, mainly of DUDE and Careless, uploaded by weiyao. For the moment, that’s all there are, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled for updates. I’d love to get my hands on some good shots of Redberry and Flying Midnight for their sets.
That’s all for this web recap of the gig, but if there’s anything else I stumble across on my travels, I’ll post it when I find it.
